Q. Can I use Tynt Insight to monitor my blog?

A. It depends. Most hosted blogging platforms do not give you access to the HTML source code but if yours does then you can use Tynt Insight. We have users that use Blogspot, WordPress, and Blogger so if you have questions please get in touch (feedback [at] tynt [dot] com). You can not add Tynt Insight to a LiveJournal account; See our WordPress FAQ for an example.

Q. How do I use Tynt Insight on my WordPress blog?

A. Tynt Insight will work only if you are hosting your own WordPress blog and are not using the hosted service. When you are logged in to your WordPress blog simply go to:

Site admin > Appearance > Editor > Footer -

then scroll down in the editor box until you see the </body> tag; simply paste your Tynt Insight script right above the </body> tag and Update File which will roll out Tynt Insight to all of the pages on your WordPress blog.

Q. Does Tynt Insight change my user’s experience on my site?

A. Impact on the end user experience is minimal; when the users pastes content copied from your site they will see the attribution link back to the original content and when a user clicks the link back the content that was originally copied will be highlighted.

Q. I noticed that Tynt Insight adds ’stuff’ to link back URLs; does this negatively affect my search engine results?

A. The ’stuff’ that we add uniquely identifies the copied content and because Tynt Insight uses a hash (#) the search engines ignore everything after the # so the URL is seen by the search engines as the same page.

Q. How big is the payload for my Tynt Insight script?

A. Approximately 12k

Q. What user actions does Tynt Insight measure?

A. Tynt Insight is designed to measure user engagement in a completely new way. Currently, Tynt Insight measures when a user:

1. Copies text

2. Copies an image

3. Highlights content while reading

Q. Does Tynt Insight impact AdSense?

A. There have been a couple cases of users suggesting that after they installed Tynt Insight, their AdSense revenue fell off. We have investigated this and come to the conclusion that, as far as we can tell, this is not the case.

Here is what we did to investigate. First we, in detail, went through the AdSense and the Tynt Insight code and were not able to locate any conflicts or issues from Tynt Insight that would change the behavior of AdSense.

Next we were able to get data from some of our Beta sites that run AdSense and Tynt Insight and we reviewed the various AdSense stats to see if there was a correlation with the install of Tynt Insight and a negative impact on AdSense revenue. From this review it appeared that in the periods both before and after Tynt Insight implementation on the sites, AdSense revenue was a highly variable and volatile number. Looking at the eCPM, Revenue, etc of a site for the 3 weeks prior to implementing Tynt Insight and the 3 weeks post implementing Tynt Insight, on average there seemed to be little discernible movement up or down. On one site we did see a drop right after implementation that lasted about 2 days, but this was not inconsistent with other periodic drops that they had experienced prior to Tynt Insight, and on the third day, things were again in their normal range.

At this point, the reports look to be coincidental, but we certainly aren’t dismissing the question and will continue to research this. If you have a concern about this, please feel free to contact us directly at tyntinsight@tynt.com, so we can get additional data to investigate.

Q. How can I block Tynt Insight from monitoring my actions?

A. Tynt understands that some people are uncomfortable having events from their web browsing recorded in a database. We take your privacy concerns seriously and we are therefore investing considerable effort into developing a feature that will allow users to block Tynt software across all the sites that are using it, from within their own browser. Until we have this blocking feature ready, it is possible to achieve a similar effect by using one of the many ad blocking components available on the net. For Firefox users, we have found Adblock plus to work well, and Super Ad Blocker is effective for IE users.

Q. How does Tynt Insight work when I copy an images?

A. Tynt Insight tracks if an image was copied, using either CTRL-C or the right click context menu. We do not currently add attribution to images.

Q. I have pasted the HTML script in every page of my iWeb site.  Yet when I View Source, its not there?

A. Your Mobileme web site(s) and all its related files are stored in the /iDisk/Web/Sites/… directory and viewable directly from finder.  iWeb then generates html code that calls out the file.  Our Tynt Script must be in the page source in order to work and cannot be loaded from a nested HTML file.  At this time Tynt Insight is not compatible with iWeb and Apple’s hosting service.

Q. Can the automatically generated attribution link be deleted by a user?

A. The automatically generated attribution link can be removed by the user.  However, seeing as you cannot prevent a user from sharing your content you can increase your chances of getting credit for it.  The automatic link provides an effortless step to reference material and can have a direct impact on your search engine ranking.
